The Enugu Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mr. Edward Zamber has said the commission is out at tackling the menace of hawking alcohol and hard drugs at motor parks describing hawkers as agents of darkness who are encouraging drivers to have accidents.

Zamber stated this in Nsukka on Friday during the 2017 flag-off of Ember Months campaign rally titled “Right to life on highways, Not Negotiable”. Zamber who was represented by the state sector operation commander, Mr. Jude Eke advised motorists to resist the temptation of drinking alcohol and other things that can cause accidents when they want to drive.
“We will continue to do our best to ensure safety on our roads but drivers and other road users should complement the commission’s efforts by doing their part,” he said He urged drivers and other road users to drive safely during the Ember months adding that FRSC would continue to do its best to ensure safety on the roads.
In a remark, the Unit Commander, Nsukka Command, Mr. Shuaibu Bello, said ninety per cent of road accidents in the country are as result of human factors. He said some of the human factors that resulted in road crashes were drivers over-speeding, lack of concentration, tiredness, driving under the influence of alcohol and dangerous over-taking.
“Research has shown that human factors contribute ninety per cent of road accidents that have consumed many lives and rendered millions physically disabled. “This rally is aimed at educating our drivers, motor-cycle riders, tricycle drivers and other road users on how to imbibe safety culture while driving. “Drivers should know that is only when you are alive you will reach your destination and drive the next day, “he said
He urged transporters and National Road transport workers to ensure that their drivers obey road signs and traffic laws by ensuring regular training of their drivers. “A good driver before embarking on any journey checks the state of his vehicle to ensure its worthiness for the trip. “Drivers should also ensure that motor mechanic that handles their vehicles are experts to avoid motor developing of faults in highways,” he said.
Bello revealed that the country recorded 9494 accidents in 2016 out of which 2638 were fatal that resulted in 5053 people death, 5053 were serious while 1423 were minor cases, adding that some of the accidents were avoidable if proper cautions have been taken. Also in remark the chairman of Nsukka LGA, Dr. Ejike Asadu commended the FRSC for the rally noting that taken caution and obeying traffic rules helped immensely to prevent accidents Asadu however expressed disappointment that commercial drivers, motorcycle riders and tricycle drivers that were the target of the rally did not attend the rally in their numbers.
“It’s only when you are safe that you will drive tomorrow and executes your plans in life “The FRSC is doing its best to help ensure sanity in our roads we should assist the commission as safety in our roads must be everybody’s concern.
Also, the Manager of Peace Mass transit in Nsukka, Mr. Asogwa Obinna commended the commission for rally saying that the company was putting measures in place to ensure that the company did not record any accident during “Ember” months.
“I commend FRSC for the rally to ensure safety of drivers and road users. Highlight of the ceremony was the cutting of the tape which signaled the Ember Months safety campaign rally in Nsukka zone Police, Civil defence, Nigerian Prisons officials, NURTW and mangers of transport companies were among stakeholders that graced the ceremony.
